East Wind Crafts at Madeline's

East Wind Crafts is the nut butter line of East Wind Community, a worker-owned intentional community founded in 1974 in the southern Missouri Ozarks near Tecumseh. The nut butters are made and sold by the community itself, which holds its assets in common, so buying a jar supports the cooperative rather than an outside owner.

The recipes are deliberately bare. Most are two ingredients or fewer: the Valencia peanut butter is just dry-roasted Valencia peanuts with optional salt, the tahini is 100 percent organic sesame seeds, and the almond and cashew butters are the nut plus a little of its own oil. There are no hydrogenated oils, added sugars, emulsifiers, stabilizers, or palm oil, and the line is gluten-free, vegan, non-GMO, and certified kosher.

The peanut butter leans on the Valencia peanut specifically, which is naturally sweeter and higher in protein than common varieties and less prone to mold. The butters are packed in recyclable glass jars, with single jars and larger bulk sizes available for each.
