10-Frame Cypress Medium 6 5/8-inch Super Box

The 10-Frame Cypress Medium Super Box is a 6 5/8-inch honey super, the box above the brood nest where bees store surplus honey. Also called an Illinois or medium, a full medium runs about 40 to 50 lbs versus 70 to 80 lbs for a deep, making it the most common and most liftable choice for 10-frame Langstroth hives.

At a glance

• Type: Medium super box (box only)
• Height: 6 5/8 inches
• Material: 7/8-inch cypress boards, naturally rot-resistant
• Compatibility: Standard 10-frame Langstroth equipment
• Weight when full: About 40 to 50 lbs versus 70 to 80 lbs for a deep
• Assembly: Choose unassembled, assembled, or assembled and painted

Best for

• Adding honey supers in late spring through summer
• Beekeepers who want lighter boxes to lift at harvest
• Running an all-medium hive where every box matches
• Surrounding baggie, Boardman, or some top feeders

How to use

Add mediums as honey supers once the brood nest is established and nectar flow is active, then pull and extract in late summer or early fall. If unassembled, assemble the box first; assembled boxes ship ready to stack, and painted boxes are finished with white primer and a UV-resistant exterior coat.
