Seed Package Size

Burbank Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) is a determinate heirloom developed by horticulturist Luther Burbank, prized for medium-sized red, round fruit with rich flavor. The compact, easy-to-manage plants set a concentrated harvest of firm, slicing tomatoes that are equally good fresh or canned, and the variety is especially well suited to drier climates.

At a glance

  • Botanical name: Lycopersicon esculentum
  • Type: Heirloom, determinate, tender annual, organic
  • Days to maturity: 70 days
  • Sun: Full sun
  • Planting depth: 1/4 inch
  • Spacing after thinning: 3 to 4 feet
  • Germination: 7 to 14 days at 70 to 85°F soil
  • Seeds per packet: about 50 (about 8,540 per 1 oz bulk)

Best for

  • Small gardens and container growing, thanks to compact plants
  • Drier climates where many tomatoes struggle
  • Gardeners who want a concentrated, determinate harvest
  • Slicing, fresh eating, sauces, and canning
  • Heirloom and seed-saving collections

How to grow

Start seeds in flats 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost and thin to 2 inches after the first true leaves appear. Harden off and transplant into compost-rich soil with a pH of 5.5 to 7.0 after frost danger passes. Soak the soil 4 to 6 inches deep at 7-day intervals, reducing water once fruit begins to color for fuller flavor. Harvest when fruit yields slightly to finger pressure.

Flavor profile

Burbank offers a rich, well-balanced tomato flavor with firm, meaty flesh that holds up in slices, sauces, and canning, and the fruit resists cracking and stores well.
