Detroit Dark Red is a superb beetroot variety, offering deeper color, smoother skin, and a more refined taproot and crown attachment than traditional Detroit selections. Even in early development, the slow bolting habit and pleasing round shape make Detroit Dark Red suitable for bunching, topping, and home garden use in temperate and subtropical regions. The dark red roots overgrow and stay tender even when 10 cm (4") across and larger. Plants grow to an average height of around 30-38 cm (12-15”) with a spread that is 25-30 cm (10-12”) wide.
How to Grow Your Detroit Dark Red Beetroots:
- Suggested Planting Depth: ½ inch in rows or solid seeded
- May be started early under lights indoors and gently transplanted outside in approximately 4 weeks.
- Suggested Planting Seasons: Spring, Late Summer, Fall
- Suggested Final Plant Spacing: 4 inches after thinning
- Suggested Planting Configuration: Single row or solid seeded wide row block
- Maintain a weed-free seed bed in full sun and with adequate moisture
