Disposable Small Hive Beetle Trap

The Disposable Small Hive Beetle Trap is an oil-reservoir trap that catches adult small hive beetles as the bees corral them into the trap's narrow slots. The slots are small enough to admit beetles but keep bees out, and once the beetles fall into the oil they cannot escape. No tools are needed to install.

At a glance

• Type: Disposable small hive beetle trap
• Method: Oil reservoir filled with any cooking oil
• Slots: Sized for beetles, too small for bees
• Installation: No tools required
• Placement: Between the two outside frames on each side of the top box
• Use: Single-use; discard and replace when full

Best for

• Keeping small hive beetle populations low
• Beekeepers wanting a chemical-free beetle control
• Spring placement before beetle numbers climb
• Adding multiple traps per box in summer

How to use

Fill each trap about halfway with any cooking oil. Place two traps between the two outside frames on both sides of the top box, where bees naturally corral the beetles. As beetles enter the oil compartment they die quickly. When a trap is full, throw it away and replace it. For best results, start in spring before beetle populations increase, and add more traps in summer if needed.
