Drone Brood Frame

The Drone Brood Frame (green drone comb) is a one-piece plastic deep frame that gives beekeepers a non-chemical way to manage Varroa mites. Its 6.4 mm drone-sized cells draw the queen to lay drone brood, which female Varroa mites strongly prefer. Removing and freezing the capped frame interrupts the mites' reproductive cycle without treatments in the hive.

At a glance

• Type: Drone comb frame for Varroa management
• Construction: One-piece plastic frame with integrated foundation
• Cell size: 6.4 mm drone cells
• Coating: Double beeswax coating for acceptance
• Color: Green, easy to spot during inspections
• Sizes: Medium and deep options

Best for

• Chemical-free Varroa mite control
• Spring use, when colonies raise abundant drones
• Beekeepers practicing integrated pest management
• Quick identification with the green color

How to use

Place the green frame in the brood nest so the queen lays drone eggs in it. Just before the cells are capped, Varroa mites enter to reproduce. Before the drones hatch, remove the entire frame and freeze it to kill both the mites and drone brood, then return it to the hive for the bees to clean out and repeat the cycle.
