Large Red Hot Cherry, also called the cherry bomb, is a mild-to-medium hot pepper rated 100 to 1,000 SHU that produces small, round, cherry-like fruits. The plants tolerate transplant shock unusually well, making them easy to move indoors and out.

At a glance

  • Type: Hot pepper (Capsicum annuum)
  • Heat: 100 to 1,000 SHU (mild to medium)
  • Shape: Small, round, cherry-like
  • Yield: Up to 70 to 80 peppers per plant in good years
  • Habit: Tolerates shock, easy to overwinter indoors
  • Sun: Full sun
  • Non-GMO: Open-pollinated heirloom

Best for

  • Pickling and stuffing
  • Fresh eating with mild heat
  • Container growing and overwintering
  • Northern and southern gardens
  • Colorful ornamental edibles

How to grow

Start seeds indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost and transplant into full sun once the soil is warm. These plants handle being moved well, so they can be cut back and brought indoors to overwinter. Harvest when fruits turn deep red.

Flavor profile

Sweet and fruity up front with a mild, rounded heat, ideal for stuffing and pickling.
