Mustard seed - non-gmo
Mustard seed - non-gmo
Mustard Seed (non-GMO) is an annual broadleaf cover crop and biofumigant seed (Brassica juncea or Sinapis alba) that produces large amounts of biomass high in glucosinolates. When chopped and incorporated, those glucosinolates break down into compounds toxic to nematodes and soil-borne disease organisms, making it a natural soil-building and pest-suppression cover crop.
At a glance
- Type: Cover crop and biofumigant seed
- Species: Brassica juncea or Sinapis alba
- Certification: Non-GMO
- Growth: Annual broadleaf, up to 5 feet, moderately frost resistant
- Biofumigant action: High glucosinolate biomass suppresses nematodes and soil-borne disease
- Seeding rate: 15 to 25 lbs per acre, or 1 to 2 lbs per 1,000 square feet
Best for
- Fall-planted cover crop to retain nutrients and suppress weeds
- Spring green manure to suppress nematodes and disease
- Improving water penetration
- Building soil organic matter
How to use
Plant 1.5 inches deep in a firm, moist seed bed at 15 to 25 lbs per acre (1 to 2 lbs per 1,000 square feet). Mustard does not tolerate drought. Allow the plants to grow fairly large to maximize glucosinolate concentration, then chop fine and incorporate into the soil. Allow 2 weeks for the plant to break down before planting a new crop.
