Organic Broccoli Di Cicco is an heirloom sprouting broccoli (Brassica oleracea, Botrytis group) of 1890 Italian origin, grown as a hardy annual. This 1/4 lb packet of organic, non-GMO seed produces vigorous light-green plants that form a 3 to 4 inch bluish-green central head, followed by many medium side shoots for a long, repeated harvest.

At a glance

  • Botanical name: Brassica oleracea (Botrytis group)
  • Type: Heirloom, organic, non-GMO; hardy annual
  • Days to maturity: 48 to 85 days
  • Sun: Partial sun
  • Planting depth: 1/4 inch
  • Spacing after thinning: 1 to 2 feet
  • Height at maturity: 2 to 3 feet
  • Approx. seeds per 1/4 lb: 27,000

Best for

  • Spring and fall plantings in cool weather
  • Gardeners who want a prolonged side-shoot harvest rather than one large head
  • Home growers who value flavor over uniformity
  • Steaming, roasting, stir-fries, and fresh eating
  • Nutrient-dense crops rich in vitamins A, C, and K

How to grow

Sow 1/4 inch deep into soil at 75 to 85°F; germination takes 4 to 20 days. Grow in partial sun and thin plants to 1 to 2 feet apart. Plants reach 2 to 3 feet and mature in 48 to 85 days. Cut the central head first, then keep harvesting side shoots to stretch the season. Plant in spring or fall for the best results in cool conditions.

Flavor profile

Di Cicco is prized as one of the best-tasting broccoli varieties, with a sweet, mild flavor in both the central head and the tender side shoots. It is rich in vitamins A, C, and K, plus potassium, phosphorus, and iron.
