Painted Mountain Corn is an organic, non-GMO flour and ornamental corn (Zea mays) grown as a tender annual, bred to be one of the hardiest corn varieties in the world. Its short, stout plants mature about two weeks earlier than other ornamental corn and produce sleek 7-inch ears in a full range of vivid orange, gold, red, and purple. How to grow
Sow 1 inch deep in full sun once soil reaches 70 to 85°F; germination takes 4 to 12 days. Thin plants to 8 inches apart and plant in blocks of several short rows to aid pollination. Plants reach 4 to 6 feet and mature in 70 to 90 days. Harvest young ears for fresh eating, or leave ears to dry on the stalk for flour, hominy, or decoration.
Flavor profile
Young ears eat as mild, tender sweet corn, while mature kernels are starchy and well suited to flour and hominy. The corn is rich in protein and a range of minerals.
