Praying Mantids (Tenodera ardefolia sinensis) are voracious garden predators that feed on most insects, mites, and insect eggs, supplied here as a case of approximately 200 eggs. Releasing egg cases in early spring builds a natural pest-control workforce in your garden.
At a glance
- Species: Tenodera ardefolia sinensis (Chinese praying mantis)
- Prey: Most insects, mites, and insect eggs
- Application rate: 10 to 100 egg cases per acre per year
- Timing: Release in early spring; generally available February to May
- Storage: Refrigerate just above freezing with slight dampness
Best for
- Natural, chemical-free pest control
- Vegetable gardens and ornamental beds
- Orchards and small farms
- Supporting beneficial-insect populations
- Hands-on hatching projects with kids
How to use
Hang each egg case in bushes or attach it to a support at least 2 feet above the ground in early spring. To watch them hatch, place a case in a paper bag, fold and clip it shut, and set it on a sunny windowsill; when tiny mantids appear, release them throughout the garden. Hatching can take up to 8 weeks of warm weather, so be patient.
