Royalty Purple Pod Bush Bean is an organic heirloom bush bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) prized for its vivid purple, stringless 5 to 6 inch pods. The compact plants carry purple flowers and short runners, and the bright pods cook to dark green on the plate. Bred by E.M. Meader at the University of New Hampshire and introduced in 1957, it germinates well even in cold, wet soil.

  • Type: Heirloom, organic, tender annual bush bean
  • Days to maturity: 50 to 60 days

  • Planting depth: 1 inch

Best for

  • Early planting, thanks to good germination in cool soil
  • Small gardens, raised beds, and containers
  • Fresh eating, steaming, and stir-frying
  • Adding ornamental color to the vegetable patch
  • Disease-aware gardens (resistant to bean common mosaic virus)

How to grow

Sow seeds 1 inch deep in full sun once soil warms to 65 to 85°F, after danger of frost has passed. Seeds germinate in 7 to 10 days; thin plants to 4 inches apart. Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged, and harvest pods when firm and crisp to encourage continued production.

Flavor profile

Sweet and tender with a rich, slightly nutty bean flavor. The purple pods turn dark green when cooked, making them a colorful addition to salads, stir-fries, and side dishes.
