How to Flash Brew:
Flash brew is a great way to lock in all the bright, aromatic notes of a coffee and chill it instantly — no watering down or long wait times. Here’s a straightforward method you can try at home:
Equipment & Ingredients
- Dripper: V60, Kalita Wave, Chemex, or any pour‑over you like
- Filter: Appropriate paper filter
- Digital scale (highly recommended)
- Gooseneck kettle (for control)
- Burr grinder
- Ice: about equal in mass to your brewed coffee yield
- Coffee: freshly roasted specialty‑grade beans
- Water: filtered, heated to 90–96 °C (195–205 °F)
Basic Recipe (1:16 ratio)
- Coffee dose: 20 g
- Total liquid yield: 320 g (160 g brew water + 160 g ice)
Tip: Adjust the ratio to your taste: 1:15 for slightly stronger, 1:17 for a lighter brew.
Step‑by‑Step

Measure & Grind
- Weigh out 20 g coffee.
- Grind to a medium‑fine texture — just a touch finer than you’d use for hot drip (think table salt).

Prepare Ice Bed
- Place a vessel on your scale. Tare to zero.
- Add 160 g of ice cubes.

Set Up Brewer
- Insert and rinse your paper filter with hot water (discards any papery flavors and pre‑heats everything).
- Discard rinse water.

Bloom (30–45 s)
- Tare scale with dripper+ice underneath.
- Add all 20 g grounds.
- Start your timer and pour 40 g water (twice the coffee weight) evenly across the bed to saturate.
- Let it bloom for 30–45 seconds.

Main Pour (1:00–1:30 min)
- After bloom, slowly pour in the remaining 120 g hot water in concentric circles, keeping the water level just above the grounds but below the top of the dripper.
- Total brew time (incl. bloom) should be around 1:30–1:45.

Flash Chill
- The brewed coffee drips directly onto the ice, melting it and instantly chilling the concentrate.

Dilute to Taste
- Give the carafe a gentle swirl to mix.
- If the coffee is too strong (or weak), adjust next time:
- Too strong → reduce coffee dose or use less ice
- Too weak → increase dose or reduce ice
