Mother Earth News is the long-running magazine of modern homesteading and sustainable living. John and Jane Shuttleworth published the first issue in January 1970, and from the start it carried a strong do-it-yourself bent, with practical articles on organic gardening, raising livestock, home building, food storage, and renewable energy. Today it is published by Ogden Publications in Topeka, Kansas.
Beyond the regular magazine, Mother Earth News compiles its best advice into themed special issues and collector editions. The Modern Homesteading and Organic Gardening collector series run to many editions, each gathering dozens of articles on self-reliant living, season-by-season growing, DIY projects, and preserving the harvest, and the Self-Sufficiency Set bundles several volumes into one collection. Herb-focused guides cover cooking with herbs, growing herbs indoors, medicinal Super Herbs, natural beauty, and women's health.
The lineup also draws on Ogden's sister titles. Grit guides cover backyard chickens, raising farm animals, backyard bees and honey, home baking, and frugal country living, and a Community Chickens set rounds out the flock-keeping shelf. A survival foraging field guide and several multi-issue bundles give homesteaders and aspiring self-reliant readers a deep, affordable library.
