At a glance

  • Variety: Arugula, heirloom (Eruca sativa), also called rocket or roquette
  • Type: Organic, hardy annual
  • Days to maturity: 35 to 50
  • Sun: Partial sun to full sun

Flavor profile

Bold and peppery with a tender texture; the edible white flowers carry a milder version of that flavor and make an attractive garnish.

Best for

  • Fresh salads, sandwiches, pizza, and garnishes
  • Spring and fall planting in cool weather
  • Succession sowing for continuous harvests
  • Containers, garden beds, and microgreens
  • Gardeners with limited space

How to grow

Sow 1/4" deep in well-draining soil at a soil temperature of 40 to 55F; germination takes 5 to 8 days. Thin to 1 to 6 inches apart and grow in full sun to partial shade. Sow in succession through the season for a steady supply, and let some plants flower to attract pollinators and reseed for early spring greens.
