Xocolatl Small Batch Chocolate at Madeline's
Share
Xocolatl Small Batch Chocolate is a bean-to-bar chocolate maker in Atlanta, Georgia, founded in 2014 by Elaine Read and Matt Weyandt. The two left their careers, moved their young family to Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica, and apprenticed with local growers and chocolatiers before bringing the craft home to Atlanta. Their shop sits in Krog Street Market, and the chocolate is made in small batches from directly sourced, fine-flavor cacao.
The bars are plant-based (dairy-free, soy-free, and gluten-free), and most single-origin bars use just two or three ingredients: cacao, organic cane sugar, and sometimes cocoa butter. Xocolatl sources beans directly from cooperatives and trade partners in Nicaragua, Peru, Uganda, and Tanzania, letting the natural flavor of each origin come through, from the fruity Tanzanian Kilombero Valley to the deep, floral Nicaraguan Matagalpa. Several bars have earned Good Food Awards, including the sweet-and-smoky Ripple Effect.
Beyond single-origin bars, the lineup includes inclusion bars (almond and sea salt, coconut, espresso, raspberry, quinoa crunch), a single-origin drinking chocolate made from ground chocolate rather than cocoa powder, roasted cacao nibs, herbal cacao teas brewed from roasted husks and nibs, and a Georgia-rooted trail mix built on local peanuts and pecans.
